Hair tourniquete syndrome
Hair Tourniquet Syndrome (A Case from KDH Emergency Department)
Today at Kotla Doctors Hospital, we received an 8-month-old male baby who was brought to the emergency department with severe swelling and redness around the penis. On careful examination, it was found that a strand of hair had tightly wrapped around the neck of the glans penis, causing constriction — a condition known as Hair Tourniquet Syndrome.
The procedure was done under local anesthesia, and the hair strand was carefully removed, immediately restoring blood flow and preventing further damage. The baby was discharged in stable condition, and his parents were counselled regarding prevention and early recognition.
⚕️ What is Hair Tourniquet Syndrome?
Hair Tourniquet Syndrome occurs when a strand of hair or thread wraps tightly around a baby’s finger, toe, or genital organ, cutting off circulation. If not recognized early, it may lead to ischemia (loss of blood supply) and even tissue necrosis.
🩺 Prevention Tips for Parents:
Regularly inspect your baby’s fingers, toes, and genital area—especially after baths or diaper changes. Remove loose hair from baby’s clothes, bedding, and diaper area. Be alert if your baby is unusually irritable or crying without visible reason—always check for any tight bands or hair strands. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice swelling or discoloration of any part.
⚠️ Remember:
Early detection can save your baby from serious complications.
